The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), released between 2021 and 2023 and synthesized in 2023, represents the most comprehensive review of climate science ever published. Its conclusions are unambiguous: human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land at a rate unprecedented in at least the past 2,000 years.

Global average temperatures have already risen approximately 1.1 to 1.2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The years since the AR6 synthesis have continued that trend, with multiple recent years registering as the hottest in recorded history. The 1.5°C threshold, the more ambitious target set by the Paris Agreement, beyond which climate impacts become significantly more severe, is now expected to be reached or crossed within the next decade under current trajectories.

The consequences of this warming are already observable, not just projected: more intense heat waves, more destructive storms, accelerating sea level rise, shifting precipitation patterns, and ecosystem disruption on every continent. For communities in low-lying coastal areas, semi-arid regions, and small island nations, these consequences aren’t future risks. They’re present realities.

What the Science Says About the Path Forward

The AR6 is clear on one thing that sometimes gets lost in the headlines: the actions we take now determine how bad things get. Warming of 1.5°C and warming of 2°C are not the same. Warming of 2°C and warming of 3°C are even more different. Every fraction of a degree matters, and every tonne of emissions avoided or removed makes the future slightly better than it would otherwise have been.

The report identifies several categories of action that, together, can keep warming below the most catastrophic thresholds. Rapid decarbonization of energy systems. Electrification of transport and heating. Changes in land use and agricultural practices. And critically, the preservation and restoration of natural carbon sinks: forests, wetlands, soils, and coastal ecosystems that store carbon and provide resilience to communities facing climate impacts.

Nature-based solutions alone cannot solve the climate crisis. But the IPCC estimates they could contribute up to 30% of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 at a cost that makes them among the most competitive climate investments available. That’s not a minor footnote. It’s a major piece of the solution.

The Communities Bearing the Brunt

One of the most important findings in the AR6 synthesis is the unequal distribution of climate risk. Communities in the Global South, which have contributed the least to cumulative global emissions, are disproportionately exposed to the worst climate impacts. Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face more unpredictable rainfall. Coastal communities in South and Southeast Asia contend with intensifying cyclones. Pacific Island nations are watching their shorelines disappear.
