How Clean Cookstoves in Honduras Generate Carbon Credits and Save Lives

Every day, hundreds of millions of families around the world cook over open fires or traditional wood-burning stoves. The food is real. The smoke is too.

That smoke carries a serious cost. According to the World Health Organization, household air pollution from cooking fires kills approximately 3.2 million people each year. Women and children bear the largest share of that burden: they spend the most time near the flame, breathing in carbon monoxide, fine particulate matter, and black carbon day after day.

This is where the climate story and the human story intersect in ways that matter.

A cookstove is a climate solution

Traditional cookstoves and open fires are inefficient by design. They burn through large amounts of wood or biomass to produce a fraction of the heat that reaches the pot. A well-designed clean cookstove can reduce fuel consumption by 40 to 60 percent while producing far less smoke. That means fewer trees cut down, less CO2 and black carbon released into the atmosphere, and dramatically cleaner air inside the home.

Those fuel savings can be measured. They can be verified. And they can be converted into carbon credits that fund the project itself, making clean cookstoves available to families who couldn’t otherwise afford them.

That’s the model behind Cool Effect’s cookstove project in Honduras.

Inside the Honduras project

Honduras sits in a region where deforestation pressure is high and access to modern cooking fuels is limited. Families in rural communities typically cook two to three times a day over wood fires, cutting from local forests that are already under strain. The emissions add up. So does the health toll.

The project distributes fuel-efficient cookstoves to households across participating communities. Each stove is designed to burn significantly less wood than the traditional open fire it replaces, reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and harmful smoke exposure. The stoves are also built for the way families actually cook: durable enough for daily use, sized for local pots, easy to maintain.

Carbon reductions from each stove are calculated using a verified methodology under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), administered by Verra. Independent third-party auditors verify the emission reductions before any carbon credits are issued. This isn’t a self-reported number.

The co-benefits don’t stop at carbon

When we talk about a cookstove project, carbon credits are only part of the picture.

Women in participating households spend fewer hours gathering firewood, time that can go toward earning income, caring for children, or continuing education. Children who previously spent time breathing smoke near cooking fires have cleaner air in the home. Forests that were being slowly depleted by fuel wood collection face less pressure.

These outcomes don’t show up directly in the carbon credit count, but they’re real and they’re part of why this project exists. Climate action, done right, doesn’t just move carbon numbers. It changes lives.

What this project can and can’t do

Clean cookstoves are not a solution to climate change on their own. No single project is. The scale of what we’re up against requires cutting emissions at the source across every sector of the global economy, and that work is happening, but it’s slow.

What a project like this one does is address emissions and human suffering at the same time, in places that have contributed the least to the climate crisis and stand to lose the most. Honduras is among the countries most vulnerable to climate-related weather events. The communities participating in this project are not waiting for a global agreement to act.
