Amazon Rainforest Preservation

The Amazon Rainforest Preservation Project preserves 53,528 hectares of dense forest in a critical region of the eastern amazon biome which is an area at high risk of deforestation. In addition to sequestering an annual average of 258,329mtCO2e, the project has multiple secondary benefits including full-time jobs for families that live in the project area. This is especially important in a region where there are few job opportunities. The project also provides improved cookstoves to community members which burn fuel for cooking more efficiently and reduce the risk of lung diseases.

The project is located in a remote area 300 km from Belem, the capital of Para State, Brazil. Its main objective is to protect the Amazon from illegal logging while protecting the natural flora and fauna. The community designed a resource management plan to preserve their culture along with the natural resources. They are working on the construction of towers across the preservation of monitoring and have plans to build a community center where they can share resources and data.

The project protects the rainforest from illegal logging and preserves natural habitats for multiple species including the Capuchin. Members of the local community benefit from both clean cookstoves and alternative income resources from the Project.

This Project addresses a unique, yet widespread problem of illegal land acquisition and the systemic clearing of forests in the Brazilian Amazon. The integrated management system of forests and lands adopted by this project ensures sustainability and recovery of indigenous reserves while mitigating threats to conservation.
