A new national campaign is looking to offset carbon emissions and lower our impact on the environment. This weekend on Earth Day the group “Cool Effect” was marching at the nation’s capitol to send a message.

“Cool Effect” spokesperson Alysia Reiner joined us on NTV’s Good Morning Nebraska. She’s better known for her role as “Fig” or Figarillo in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.”

Reiner said Nebraska holds a special place in her heart because her first movie was with Nebraska native and director Alexander Payne.

The actress and outspoken environmentalist talked about her efforts to try to live a sustainable lifestyle. She says the campaign “Cool Effect” gives consumers a chance to offset their carbon emission footprint by funding projects that help reduce emissions.

According to the organization’s website, one project is raising funds to help Costa Rica reach their 2021 carbon neutral goal. Another project, “the Productive Poo” in India is turning cow poop into a clean biogas families use for cooking.

Reiner is also passionate about reducing people’s impact on the environment, “It’s one of those things where everyone has to do their part and do the little bit that they can, and for me personally when I take action, I feel more at peace.”
